Big changes on the Horizon

We have a lot of things coming up...I feel them churning and ready to break forth.

New job for the Man
Moving back closer to where we came from
Ministry opportunities opening up
Changing jiu jitsu schools

There is more but that's all I can manage to talk about right now. At the end of it all, I think we are going to take advantage of one of the local cruises and get away from everything. It is going to be a while before we are "settled" again... though with God, you are never really settled into anything.

Things I Appreciate about Costa Rica

It's the most enthusiastically baby-friendly place I've ever been. Babies are welcome everywhere. Our local mall is all geared up for children, with a small train whirring around the ground floor, a playground, and a bouncy castle. They run special events as well - face painting and story times. Most supermarkets have cars that fit on the front of the shopping carts so that toddlers can 'drive' around the store. They also often have tiny shopping carts for children to push around.

Everyone fusses over babies, even the most unexpected people like the lads packing groceries in the supermarkets. I pushed Petra in her pram through a checkout one night and noticed one of the boys (who would have been in his late teens at most) saying muy linda, muy linda, and nudging the guy beside him to look at Petra. A teenage boy in New Zealand or Canada would have been extremely unlikely to have noticed a baby and if he had, he certainly wouldn't have gushed about her to a friend. That would be far too unmanly!

And K, Petra and I were passed by a group of men on horseback the other day (mounted police perhaps - we couldn't be sure), one of whom waved at us as he went by, then turned to keep on waving until he rode out of view. Petra lives in a world full of excited cooing people who smile at her and touch her hands and feet as if she's some kind of idol. It's lovely to see.

That warmth and tolerance makes going out with your baby easy and fun. We've never encountered anyone who was anything but delighted to have Petra around. And we know that if she cries for any reason people will be sympathetic and helpful, not judgemental or annoyed.

I think people are enthusiastic because family is the most important part of people's lives here. Everyone seems to be part of a close-knit extended family community and everyone has lots of contact with children. Mother's Day is a national holiday. (It was last Friday in fact. I celebrated by sleeping as much as I could while Travis was home to play with Petra. I'm still fighting off the last lingering traces of the mastitis and sleep seems like the best cure.) And about the only rules that are not for breaking in Costa Rica are rules about children. You can do almost anything you like here, but you can't skip out on paying child support and you can't take a Costa Rican child out of the country without special permits and reams of paperwork. Those rules are rigidly enforced.

Totally Terrible Tuesday Things:

The anticipation as you wait your turn for your yearly evaluation
Money stress
Fighting with the husband
Keeping the house 'show ready'
Job stress (different than waiting on the eval.)
Friends that owe you a large amount of money (that was promised to be paid back six months ago)----then go out and spend a smaller (yet still large) amount of money on something not necessary: then brags about the 'deal' received.

Totally Terrific Tuesday Things:

The feeling of relief when you get your evaluation and it isn't as bad as you had thought it might be
The house was shown twice yesterday! Twice!
16 years ago today, Chris walked into Wal~Mart during his lunch break. He heard me paged over the intercom, looked me up and we've been together ever since. Fights, fears, loss, and everything---we're still here and we're still strong.

knock on wood

Furniture Making/Design class begins tonight at the local college. I'm nervous about managing school while working full time; the lengthy commute to campus; and I'm insecure about my skill level as compared to other students. I am, however, excited to play with power tools and have access to a woodshop again!

This will be the first time I have been a woodworker and a corporate person simultaneously. I have always had the luxury of compartmentalizing these divergent aspects of myself. It will be interesting to see how high heels by day and steel-toed boots by night interplay with one another.

Obviously, this is something I will have to get used to...my goal is to start by having a small shop, while continuing to make real money, until the shop becomes sustainable. I'm not sure how likely it is that I will be able to pull this off in San Francisco - the dream will likely need to wait until we move back to Hawaii. But, as long as I am in that place by my 30th birthday, I will be happy. *knock on wood*

Sleep

Petra's been very tired for the past few days - making up for all the sleep she missed while she was teething perhaps - and keeps falling asleep on our laps. As for Travis, there's nothing quite like a sleeping baby in your arms to make you doze off, especially when you're a sleep-deprived parent. I do it all the time as well.
