NaBloPoMo - Day 12
Day 12
Dominican Money
I love Dominican money! Not just because it's money (ha!) but it's colorful and not green boring, like what I'm used to.
The peso is the national currency. There are coins of 1, 5, 10 and 25 pesos and then there are bills for DOP$ 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000.
Yeah, I have had bills of 1000 and 2000 on my hands. Sadly, they're a lot less worthy than US dollars, but it is still exciting!
An interesting fact is that very rarely you receive change when purchasing anything. The smallest money you can receive is 1 peso. Some establishments are bothered when you pay with old bills. They requiere new money. Also, it is best to always carry small bills as no one ever has change. Some stores will give you bubble gum or a Hall's candy as change if they don't have the correct amount. I've had that happen to me a lot of times.
Pictures and US dollar value as of today:
$1 DOP = .030¢, $5 DOP = .15¢, $10 DOP = .30¢, $25 DOP = .75¢
(The $25 DOP coin looks dark in this picture, but it's really very silvery and bright.)
10 DOP = .30¢
20 DOP = .60¢
50 DOP = $1.50
100 DOP = $3.00
500 DOP = $15.00
1000 DOP = $30.00
2000 DOP = $60.00
(As of right now 1 US Dollar = 34.15300 Dominican R. Peso.)
