Day 9
I am at a loss for words today.
I don't feel good. My head hurts.
I need some comfort food (you know, McD's!) even though I ate a huge slice of pizza a while ago. It doesn't seem like it was enough. Not that satisfying. It was good, but I needed at least three more slices.
Talk about compulsive and emotional eating.
Let's just say you can cut the tension in the air here with a plasma cutter.
*Sighs*
Today's NaBloPoMo? Two random pictures from the trip to Juan Dolio on Tuesday.
The first is from the only toll booth I have ever seen in this country. It costs $30 DOP (or 90¢ according to today's exchange rate). The second one is of a huge sign made for Dominican baseball player Sammy Sosa. I think it was to give him encouragement to break a homerun record or something.
I've always been extremely pissed about gender roles. The other day I witnessed something that made me terribly mad, yet I didn't speak up. I rarely speak up just to avoid getting into arguments with people who probably won't understand what I'm trying to say. But I worry about the little kids that will grow up with a contorted version of reality thinking they can't do this or that just because they're a boy or a girl.
My neighbor has 8-year-old twin girls and a 6-year-old boy. We started going to the park nearby to walk around it and exercise a little. Of course, her kids always come along. The park (or sports complex) has a gym, a baseball field, a basketball field, 2 tennis field, a stage where dancing clubs practice and a batting field.
The little boy loves baseball, and as we walked around the batting field he decided to stay there and watch the big kids practice and maybe take a few swings himself. One of the girls wanted to stay too. I was really surprised when her mother yelled:
NO. YOU ARE A GIRL. THAT IS FOR BOYS! THERE ARE TOO MANY BOYS THERE. YOU STAY WITH THE GIRLS!
The girl was disappointed, I could tell. And so was I.
What is wrong with her staying there? What is wrong with her playing ball?
I hate when parents encourage different styles of raising their kids just because of their gender. People can't choose their kid's interests just like that. We are all equal and we are all capable of doing anything we want to do.
I am glad I was never a victim of this. When I was in high school I tried to play softball and basketball. It turns out I sucked at it but still, my mother always cheered for me. I also danced (I sucked at it too) at a folkloric group and sang at a choir. Anything I wanted to do, my mother was always a support. For that, I thank her.
I wish everyone had such an open mind.
This is how I've been watching the baseball games of the Puerto Rican team. Check out MLB.com Gameday. It's interactive and gives the information in real-time. Almost like watching the real thing. Riight. Anyway, about my team: I've lost hope. The Dominicans are champions, okay, blah blah blah. :o(
The Superbowl
or
Puerto Rico vs. Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series...
What do you think?
1. I don't know anything about football.
2. I love baseball!
3. Being a Puerto Rican living at the Dominican Republic (just for a couple of weeks) makes it all more exciting!
I want to see the game but the TV broke a few days ago (the power goes out all the time here and there are always changes in voltage), so I don't know. Maybe we can go out and watch it somewhere. P already received an invitation to watch the Superbowl somewhere, but I know he'd rather watch the baseball game too.
This people breathe baseball here, they're extremely passionate about it. And so are the Puerto Ricans (with a little less intensity, of course).
The Series are going on in Puerto Rico, and both PR and the DR have been rivals for a long time. This is a much expected game and I kinda wish I was there today. I miss my little Island.
I am rooting for my people. I am rooting for my team. Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico!!
