I am obsessed with office supplies. I love pencils, ink pens, markers, notebooks, etc. etc. It's been like that since forever. Now my niece, who's 5, has become the new Mini Me. She loves and has been collecting her own school supplies for about a year. She's very artsy and crafty, and she much rather be working on her notebooks than running outside. I was exactly the same at her age. Isn't it cool how certain traits are passed along generations like that?
I don't think I mentioned (this blog has been kind of quiet lately), tat when I arrived here on February 16th, I arrived with some family members. Yeah, after checking out some vacation deals my father and his long-time girlfriend, my sister, my brother in law, my niece and another couple (friends of my sister) decided they should come to the DR and check this place out. They had never been here before. They only stayed for the weekend at an all-inclusive hotel and I got to show them some of the places where I hang out when I'm here. Of course, we were time-challenged but at least they got to see this apartment (they had heard so many complains about it!), the colmado, and the supermarket where I buy groceries and stuff. I loved having them here. My niece had her hair braided and she looked so cute. I was so, so sad when they left. I am grateful that they came, and I hope they can make it again some time in the future.
Now that my niece has learned to read and write, she leaves her grafitti everywhere.
I was really laughing when I saw that she had written the word "mamá" (mom in Spanish) on one of my sister's menstrual pads.
**LOL**
I am very proud of her accomplishments. She's getting all A's in school, she's part of our town's dancing group, and she's just in general a very easy little girl to deal with.
She is planning her birthday (way too early for that!) and she decided that the theme will be The Littlest Pet Shop. She loves animals. I hope to be there for her birthday this year. Last year was the first time since she was born that I didn't fill her kids party invitations and attended her celebration. That made me so sad.
Needless to say I love her a great deal.
I think I need to start worrying about packing. I didn't bring enough luggage, and I have way too many things here that I either acquired here or were sent to me by my parents. I really want to buy a cute set of luggage, like these Swiss Army ones. That way I'll have plenty to accommodate my stuff. It won't be a waste of money, as I expect to be traveling back and fort between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for at least another one and a half years.
I think I am going back in about two weeks. Hopefully. I am so excited. I can't wait to see my niece, and my nephew, and my dog Kiri, and my mother, and my father, and my brother, and the neighbors, the in-laws...well, everybody! I can't wait to see Puerto Rico again. It's been three months but it feels like a lifetime.
It seems that everybody around me is obsessed with jewelry, which gets to the question I ask myself: am I normal? My sister has worked in jewelries for years. A few months ago she started working at Zale's. My aunt used to sell wholesale fashion jewelry too. My cousins love gold jewelry, so does my mother. My mother in-law has a drawer full of gold necklaces and bracelets. My sister has a collection of all kinds of gold and white gold jewelry. I prefer her taste because it's kind of chic. I like white gold and I find some jewelry beautiful, but I'm not that into it.
I have very few pieces of jewelry. I have two pairs of silver earrings, and the other ones are what I like to call funky jewelry. Mostly made of wood, seashells, coconut, and beads. I am satisfied with it. I like how they look. I buy them at arts & crafts festivals, and crafty stores. I've found some nice pieces here too. What's not to like about them? They're cheap, cute, and trendy. At least for me they are.
It's 4th of July...and people couldn't care less here in the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, my sister has a pool party with all of our friends and the kids, and beer and dominoes and lots of yummy grilled food. Wish I was there.
Happy birthday to spooktastic too!
